1000 Islands Winter of Family Fun!

Warm up your winter with big family fun, in the Thousand Islands!

Winterfests are a tradition in northern New York: they help stave off ‘cabin fever’ and remind people spring is on the way. The Tri-Town Winterfest, held each year in February, has a parade and activities such as tug-of-war and snowmobile races and demonstrations. Fun, food, family, fireworks and more – The Annual Warm Up Oswego Festival is February 3-4! Maple Weekends (March 16-17 and March 23-24) will be celebrated at Red Schoolhouse and Maple Hollow Farm. Celebrate the coming of spring at Potsdam Spring Fling, a new festival held the last weekend in March in this picturesque college town.

Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY) showcases the region’s folk culture and living traditions, and offers educational modules about storytelling, music, crafts, architecture, and other expressions of the North Country’s identity. TAUNY’s “Register of Very Special Places” is a list of outstanding local cultural landmarks, nominated by local residents.

Take a tour of the St. Lawrence - Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project and learn all about electricity - how it’s produced, how to conserve energy and more via dozens of interactive exhibits. The New York State Zoo focuses on NYS native animals, and while in town, visit the Tug Hill area to enjoy more outdoor activities and winter sports.

The Thousand Islands Arts Center has a permanent textile collection, library, classes and a retail store brimming with the work of nearly 100 regional artists. “The Art of Winter” exhibition (February 1-March 30) and Heritage Arts Day (February 9) are BIG highlights.

The 13th Annual Great Eastern Whiteout (February 9) is an antique/vintage snowmobile show, swap meet and race. Or, try ice climbing at the Salmon River Falls. The Sandy Pond Sportsmans Association holds its 38th Annual Ice Fishing Derby (February 16-17) and its 9th Annual Chili Cook-Off (March 2-3).

Go Saints! St. Lawrence University’s Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey teams play home games indoors at the 3,000-seat Appleton Arena. And, Oswego County and SUNY Oswego offer activities and events all winter long: Oswego State Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey games, Saturday night Round and Square Dances and more!

The St. Lawrence Centre: Shopping & Entertainment Mall has shopping PLUS a full-size multi-purpose arena with year-round skate rentals for all ages.
