Catskills Indoor Winter Family Fun!

Family Fun in the Catskills!

Woodstock, “Colony of the Arts,” is colorful, lively and just made for browsing, dining out and shopping. Art galleries, live music and people watching – after a brisk hike up Overlook Mountain or a stroll in the town’s wooded Comeau Property – will warm up your winter visit!

The Ashokan Center’s Winter Hoot (February 1-3), features world class music, homemade pie contest, nature photography, blacksmithing, birding, and much more!

Belleayre Mountain has skiing, snowboarding, Nastar and racing team, Kidscamp, day care, four lodges AND ASIA Bumpfest (February 9-10), 3rd Annual Tailgate Cookout Competition (March 16), Reggae Fest (March 23-24), Cardboard Classic (March 30), Turn N Burn competition (March 31) and more.

The Community Theater has movies and special events, and is not far from upstate ski areas.

Holiday Mountain Ski & Fun Park’s slogan is “Where Great Skiers Begin,” and they cater to all ages. Their new Magic Carpet is great for beginners; there’s also snow tubing and a Snowboard Club for more advanced winter sports enthusiasts. During “President’s Week at Windham Mountain” (February 16-24), there’s day and night tubing at Mountain Top Adventure Park; ice sculptures; Big Air Bag Throwdown; magicians; bounce house; live music and DJs too; and, of course, great skiing and snowboarding! March 2 is the 3rd Annual U.S. Ski Team Day at Windham – bring the kids to meet American legends of skiing, Olympians, and local Adaptive Sports heroes for a day of skiing, riding and inspiration.

At Bridle Hill Farms, horseback trail riding and lessons are a great way for kids and families to learn all about riding and horses, from grooming to riding. At nearby Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, interactive exhibits and museum emphasizing Woodstock and the icons of the 60s – with concerts such as The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (February 7) and Solas – A Celtic Rock St. Patrick’s Day Celebration (March 16) – offer a great weekend, indoors and out.

Armstrong’s Elk Farm is an exciting place to learn about elk farming and other wildlife. Skiing, snowtubing and all the other winter sports and ski lodge amenities, are at award-winning Hunter Mountain Resort: Hunter hosts a kids’ racing event, the Mini World Cup 2013 (February 16, March 3).

Rent snowmobiles at Rip Van Winkle Ranch and at Bear Creek Landing, or go horseback riding on scenic trails at Tanglewood Ranch and Bailiwick Ranch/Catskill Equestrian. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are favored winter sports at Mountain Trails, just 10 minutes from Hunter. New York Zipline Adventure Tours’ Mid Mountain Tour is an adventurous course, not for the faint of heart. For a five-state panoramic view, lodging and dining, try Point Lookout Mountain Inn.

On February 9, during an Eagle Tour at the Mongaup Valley Wildlife Management Area, learn to identify and appreciate our national bird, the American bald eagle.
