Long Island

Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center in Riverhead

Long Island's Winter of Family Fun!

Long Island winter means Family Fun - Indoors & Out!

At Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and Aquarium, from February 18-22, take advantage of Vacation Activities such as “Recycled Art,” “Wildlife in Winter,” and “Slippery Slimy Science.” There’s a “Spring Egg Hunt” (March 30), Spring Break programs (March 25-29), and Opening Day of Trout Season is April 1, all sure signs of spring!

Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center – one of Parents’ Magazine’s “10 Best Aquariums for Kids” -- has fun (and aquatic) family fun ideas like “Meet A Penguin” and “Kiss a Sea Lion!” You can even “Sleep with the Fishes” if you like: groups of 20 or more can hold a sleepover, including dinner and breakfast, a movie, tour, and sleeping up close to one of the exhibits.

Spend ”Family Sundays at the Museum” at Nassau County Museum of Art for guided exhibition tours -- “Artists in America” and “Martin Kline: Excerpts in Encaustic” (both through February 24) -- and cool family art activities.

The Staller Center has Motionhouse Dance (February 16), “Raisin’ Cane” with Jasmine Guy & The Avery Sharpe Trio (February 23), Tap Kids (March 10) – and more!

Guild Hall is hosting a Valentine’s Day Cookie Decorating Workshop for families and kids (ages 6-9) on February 9, with all materials supplied by Citarella - yummy! And, their “21st Annual Student Art Festival, Part II: Grades 9-12” runs March 9 - April 14.

American Hall of Fame professional basketball player Dennis Rodman will sign copies of his new children’s book, “Dennis the Wild Bull,” on February 5 at Book Revue

Long Island Children’s Museum is fun & educational! And, though everyone says “Don’t Play with Your Food!”, artist/educator Julianne Zegers makes sculptures out of hers (February 5-April 28). LICM has early childhood programs, family workshops, gallery activities and more.

Mark your calendar for The Pink Floyd Experience (February 12), Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes (March 2), Clifford The Big Red Dog – Live! (March 12), and Jewel (March 13), among other shows at The Paramount.

Cold Spring Whaling Museum has fun for all ages! Check out their special events or just visit to see New York State’s only fully-equipped 19th century whaleboat and their other exhibits and collections.

The World Fishing & Outdoor Exposition (February 28-March 3) is THE Sport Fishing Supershow – and it attracts all the fishing tackle manufacturers, plus vendors, seminars and more. Nassau Coliseum has The Harlem Globetrotters (February 17) and Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus (March 13-17) – now that’s fun!
