In 1991, construction in Lower Manhattan unearthed the remains of over 400 free and enslaved Africans, thus re-discovering the largest and oldest burial ground of its kind in the U.S.; today, the African Burial Ground National Monument commemorates the approximately 15,000 who are estimated to have been buried in the area with a striking monument and visitor center offering background information, related exhibitions and cultural events.
