Catskill Outdoor Summer Adventures
Forest Preserves, Hunter Mountain, Mohonk Mountain House & More
Lace up your walking shoes. Well-worn paths through the rolling Catskill Scenic Trail’s dreamlike landscapes offer escape by foot, bike or horse. Bear Spring Mountain State Park lets you explore 24 miles of trails by foot or horseback with stalls and trailer parking. There’s also a beach, boat rentals and plenty of brown trout in well-stocked Launt Pond.
A short half-mile walk yields big views at popular Kaaterskill Falls. At 260 feet, it’s the highest cascading falls in New York. For a bigger challenge, Alpine Endeavors offers instruction to rock climbers of all abilities. Hunter Mountain offers most every summer recreation. Hike the Catskills along miles of trails, enroll in fly fishing school, or board the new Kaatskill Flyer sky ride that floats you to Hunter Mountain's majestic 3,200 foot summit.
Campers flock to the quarter-million-acre Catskill Forest Preserve for secluded campsites and hundreds of miles of marked hiking trails. Spanning 30 mountain peaks, the Great Northern Catskills are home to two state campgrounds—Devil’s Tombstone and North-South Lake plus private camping sites and cabins. Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds has large, secluded sites, a beach and pond.
Catskills waterways offer the best trout fishing in the east on the Beaverkill River and its Willowemoc tributary, considered the most historic trout rivers in America with long flat pools and a mix of brown, rainbow and brook trout. The Neversink River is a dry-fly fishing top pick, while the Esopus Creek offers the highest number of trout per mile of any Catskill stream.
Back on dry land, championship Blackhead Mountain Lodge & Country Club is one of many courses that challenge golfers with mountain terrain, water hazards, doglegs and two-tier greens.
Children can pet friendly farm animals at Breezeway Farm, walk amid free-flying butterflies and tropical birds at the Joseph L. Popp Jr. Butterfly Conservatory, or board the Catskill Mountain Railroad for a scenic rail ride.
For braver hearts, Hunter Mountain’s Zipline Adventure Tours zips you through the forest canopy at heights of 600 feet, while Above The Clouds provides even higher views of rolling green hills and pastoral farms from the lofty embrace of a giant hot air balloon.
Outdoor music fests echo through every hillside, including the Hunter Mountain Jam, Belleayre Music Festival, and Oak Hill’s Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival.
