Greater Niagara: Summer Fun!
It’s a wonderful world! This region is full of awesome adventures, cultural treasures and natural wonders. Cool things to see and do range from great performances and works of art, to trophy fishing in two Great Lakes, to the grandeur of Niagara Falls.
In Niagara Falls State Park, you’ll sail right up to the falls on the Maid of the Mist boat tour. Hardy walkers can follow guides over wooden walkways to the famous "Hurricane Deck" on the wild Cave of the Winds Tour, then take a tour of the Aquarium. For a relaxing view, dine in the Top of the Falls restaurant. Nearby, Lewiston’s breathtaking Whirlpool Jet Boat Tour ranks as one of North America’s Top 5 Adventure Rides!
About 45 minutes from Niagara Falls, Darien Lake theme park features wild coasters, waterslides and a thrilling new tower ride. The spectacular new “Ignite the Night” Laser Blast presents an action packed show with cutting-edge pyrotechnics and water technology. High above the Niagara River Gorge, Artpark presents outdoor concerts, Broadway musicals, and fun festivals June through August.
Lockport Locks and Erie Canal cruises showcase America’s historic waterway. In July the 33rd annual Canal Fest of the Tonawandas celebrates canal heritage with music, fireworks and other festivities. On a bluff above Lake Ontario, Old Fort Niagara brings history to life with colorful pageantry and special events all summer.
The region borders two Great Lakes—Erie and Ontario—offering world-class boating and trophy fishing. Hiking and bike trails weave between 600-foot cliffs and around sparkling waterfalls along the 17-mile-long gorge at Letchworth State Park, called the Grand Canyon of the East. You can also go whitewater rafting, kayaking and camping. For an unforgettable experience, take a hot-air balloon ride over the magnificent gorge.
Buffalo’s cultural treasures include Frank Lloyd Wright’s stunning Darwin Martin House, acclaimed theaters, the Burchfield-Penney Art Center and the Albright-Knox Gallery. Take a stroll during the National Buffalo Garden Festival, a five-week-long garden party (June to August), featuring 14 gorgeous garden tours–including America’s largest, Garden Walk Buffalo.
Taste regional specialties at historic Broadway Market, Charlie the Butcher's Beef on Weck sandwich that originated in Buffalo, and the Anchor Bar, where Teressa Bellissimo cooked up the original recipe for Buffalo Wings.
