The Catskills

Mountains ablaze with autumn colors!

Head to the Catskills for a colorful autumn getaway.  Awesome natural beauty, legendary hospitality and close proximity to New York City combine for a perfect vacation. Mountain lakes and sparkling streams surround one-of-a-kind attractions. Follow scenic trails to waterfalls, high peaks and breathtaking views in the Catskill Forest Preserve. Follow country roads to antique shops and farm markets bursting with a fresh fall harvest.

Unique places to stay include North-South Lake Campground and mountaintop resorts at Windham and Hunter, with golf, fall festivals, and awesome sky-rides. And you just have to see the theme rooms at The Roxbury Motel—rated on National Geographic’s Stay List—to appreciate how cool they are. The entire town of Roxbury is on the National Historic Register.

One of the best ways to experience autumn’s colors is a scenic train ride.  Take a comfortable seat in one of the Catskill Mountain Railroad’s vintage coaches, or enjoy panoramic views from an open car. Fall Foliage Specials run from September 28 to October 28. Journeys aboard the Delaware & Ulster Railroad run through of an ever-changing landscape of quaint villages, majestic mountains and pastoral farms, along the scenic East Branch of the Delaware River.

Great autumn events include the Wine, Wing & Brew Fest at Hunter Mountain, October 13 to 14. Taste craft beers and microbrews from New York State and beyond. Along with art and craft vendors and entertainment, the grape stomping contest is back by popular demand!  On Sunday, sample hot wings and BBQ from local restaurants. The Skyride and Zipline Adventure Tour, the longest and highest in North America, will be operating both days (zipline reservations recommended).

On September 29 to 30 and October 6 to 7, Hunter’s Oktoberfest, a modern celebration of the harvest, features authentic Bavarian entertainment and food, craft shows and children’s activities.

Put on your coolest shades and head to the Woodstock Film Festival, featuring films, concerts and celebrity panels from October 10 to 14. One of the best independent film shows in the nation, it attracts emerging and established filmmakers and top talent.

In Catskill visit Cedar Grove, home of 19th-century artist Thomas Cole who founded the Hudson River School. From the porch you’ll see the lovely autumn landscapes that inspired him.

The Upper Delaware Scenic Byway snakes along the river to dramatic vistas and unique attractions like the Catskill Fly Fishing Center.
