Athens

Located on a wide expanse of the majestic Hudson River, Athens in Greene County, boasts a collection of more than 100 Victorian homes nestled among its tree-lined streets. So picturesque is this tiny village that two major motion pictures - Tom Cruise’s War of the Worlds and Meryl Streep’s Ironweed - were filmed there in recent years. Ursula’s, a down-home diner on the waterfront, became a favorite of the casts and crews of both films as well as to the town’s guests. Visitors to Athens can also enjoy dining at Yani’s III and Stewart House.

Athens always has something fun and interesting to do. Tours of the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse are available on a seasonal basis from Athens Riverfront Park, where the beacon can be viewed year-round. In July, Athens hosts a day-long Street Festival with vendors, food, entertainment and fabulous fireworks at dusk. Celebrating with over 100 booths, a themed parade, and theme park rides, it’s impossible not to have fun at this spectacular riverfront party!

You can bring the beauty of the Catskills home with you after you visit Black Horse Farms and purchase one of their famous perennials for your garden. Black Horse prides itself on searching the world over for the best seeds and selling colorful annuals, healthy vegetables and herb plants for the past 30 years. Regardless of the season, the facilities are open everyday so you never have to lose your green thumb!

Any time of the year, Athens is a perfect destination for a family vacation. Relishing in the famed splendor of the Catskills, Athens brings its own unique history and native appeal to mountain life as only this captivating town can!
